While this article applies to most Entities in O3, we will be using IWPs as an example.

What are Development Steps?

Development Steps track the development of your work packages. For many work packages, there are many elements to assemble before they can be issued and executed. This can include documentation, materials, associated deliverables, and so on.

Think of Development Steps as your grocery list of things you need to get for your work packages.

Development Steps and constraints are similar, but different. If your Development Steps are your grocery list, your constraints are your to-do list. Constraints are actions that, if left unchecked, can impact the timeline of a work package.

Creating Development Steps

Click into an Installation Work Package (IWP) and go to the Development tab.

Here you can see all of the IWP's Development Steps.

Development Steps can be created a couple different ways.

  • By clicking on the + above the grid.

  • Automatically. Development Steps can be listed as auto created, meaning whenever a work package is created, those Development Steps will be created as well.

Managing Development Steps

To close out a Development Step, click into it.

Then click on the Status field and choose Complete.

Development Step completion can also be automated via auto completion triggers. E.g., whenever a Drawing is attached to an IWP, it automatically closes out a Development Step tracking drawing assignment.

Project admins can learn more about this here.

Whenever a Development Step is closed out, it updates the work package's % Developed metric.
