An Engineering Work Package (EWP) is a set of deliverables produced by the engineering team for a specific discipline within a Construction Work Area (CWA).
What's Included in an Engineering Work Package?
EWPs generally contain the following:
Engineering scope of a single discipline within a given CWA. EWPs typically have a one-to-one relationship with a corresponding Construction Work Package (CWP).
Materials, drawings and their specifications, and model shots. All of this information is usually delivered in the form of a document.
Features of an Engineering Work Package
EWPs are area-based, not System-based. While they may contain elements from different Systems, typically they will not include entire Systems.
These elements do not cross CWA boundaries under normal circumstances. An exception might be early civil or deep undergrounds that cover the whole site. These often utilize site-wide general CWAs or cable that can stretch across multiple areas.
There is no set size for EWPs. EWPs generally include 5,000 to 20,000 manhours of field labor. More importantly, you should avoid unnecessarily large EWPs (> 50,000 manhours) as this makes building and tracking the EWP more difficult.
Preparing & handing off Engineering Work Packages
There needs to be clear definition in terms of when each EWP will be completed and how the transfer of this information to the construction team will take place. Each of these activities needs to be identified within your project schedule.
EWPs in AWP
During the FEL2/Select phase, EWPs are represented for each CWA and discipline.
As the scope is further defined, the matrix is refined and the engineering team gains a more realistic idea of their scope for each CWA and discipline.
During the Execute phase, EWPs are fully developed with all their necessary documentation and information.
