Definition

Construction Work Packages (CWPs) are scope packages that typically contain all the work for a specific Discipline within a given Construction Work Area. These packages are used to facilitate construction planning and prioritization of execution.

An example of a CWP might be all the piping work in CWA-04 or the electrical and instrumentation work in CWA-05. Below is an example of a CWP seen in a model.

A CWP's Contents

In addition to the contents of an Engineering Work Package, a CWP will contain the following:

  • Manpower.

  • Equipment.

  • Safety & Quality documentation.

  • Permits.

  • Heavy lift.

  • Scaffolding.

  • Tools.

  • And turnover.

Features of a CWP

CWPs are delivered in the form of a document listing all relevant construction information, including the contents above.

Like Engineering Work Packages (EWPs), CWPs are area-based and not system-based. While they will include elements from multiple different systems, they will not contain systems in their entirety.

These elements generally do not cross CWA boundaries unless the circumstances are exceptional. It is during these circumstances that require different areas or contractors to interface with one another.

Preparing & Scheduling CWPs

Who prepares the CWPs will largely depends on how the project's scope has been contracted out.

When the Owner is acting as the Construction Manager (CM), the Owner's construction team will develop the CWPs. Alternatively, if the owner has picked a specific contractor to act as the CM, they will prepare the CWPs.

If work is being delegated to Engineering, Procurement Contractors (EPCs), then the EPC will generally build both the EWPs and the CWPs.

The release of an EWP serves as a starting point for the development of a CWP. Understanding the release schedules of your EWPs is important - if your EWPs are late, it'll have a downstream effect on your CWPs.

CWPs in AWP

CWPs are single discipline scope packages of CWAs. CWPs typically have a one-to-one relationship with EWPs and are broken down into scope packages called Installation Work Packages (IWPs).
