Learn how to update the status of your work packages, and what might prevent them from transitioning between statuses.

While O3 supports status transitions for multiple work package types, this article uses IWPs as an example.

Note: this article assumes you have the necessary permissions for creating and editing work packages. Check with your Project Admin before reading on.

Navigating to the IWP Detail Form

Click on Work Packages > Installation (IWPs) in the left-side navigation menu, then double-click an IWP in the grid.

Your screen should look something like the image below.

Updating The IWP's Status

Click on the IWP Status field in the top-right corner and select the new status.

You'll notice the status transition reflected in the Status History section.

Why Can't I Change My Work Package's Status?

All The Preconditions of The Next Status Haven't Been Met

It's possible your Project Admin required the work package to be 100% developed or 100% constraint-free before transitioning to the next status.

If you're unable to go to the next status and none of the below points apply, check with your Project Admin to see what the pre-conditions of the next status are.

The New Status is not a Valid Transition Status

Your Project Admin can restrict which statuses you can transition to given the current status of the work package.

E.g., in our demo project, you can only transition IWPs from In Development to Ready for Review.

If Automatic is enabled, then the work package will automatically transition to that status once all of the pre-conditions have been met.

Only Project Admins can Update The Work Package's Status

If your Project Admin has enabled this setting, then they and others with Project Admin access are the only ones that can transition the work package.

I Don't Remember Creating All these Approvals & Constraints!

No need to worry! Your Project Admin likely configured auto-created approvals and constraints for specific statuses.

This means whenever your work package transitions into that status, O3 will automatically create approvals and constraints that your team needs to clear.

Check with your Project Admin to find out which ones.
