Definition
A constraint is any item that blocks work from getting done and can be resolved. Constraints are associated with another entity such as a Work Package, Document, Piece of Equipment, and much more.
Each Constraint contains the following fields:
Constraint ID - unique identifier for the constraint, often auto-generated by O3
Parent Entity - The Work Package, Document, Mechanical Equipment, etc. that the constraint is blocking
Constraint Type - Constraints may be grouped into types, or categories. This grouping is useful for reporting on similar constraints. Constraint Types are managed on a per-Project basis by Project Administrators.
Name - Short identifier for a specific constraint
Description - Provides more information about the specific constraint
Notes - Provides additional detail and associated notes for the constraint
Priority - Very Low, Low, Medium, High, or Very High and is a measure of the impact of the constraint
Urgent - Very Low, Low, Medium, High, or Very High and is a measure of the timeliness of the constraint
Due Date - Date that a constraint must be completed by to prevent delays
Forecast Date - Best current estimate for date of constraint completion
Company - Company that is responsible for clearing the constraint
Assigned to Role - Role that is responsible for clearing the constraint.
Assigned to User - User that is responsible for clearing the constraint. When assigned, the user will be notified by email and the constraint will appear in their task list.
Assigned to User Group - User Group that is responsible for clearing the constraint (where more than one user is potentially responsible). When assigned, all users will be notified by email and the constraint will appear in their task lists.
Comments - Used to provide updates on the constraint
Field Level History - Used to record changes on the constraint
Finally, the constraint can be approved or marked for additional verification by anyone with the proper permissions on the bottom of the constraint. Their User ID will be recorded as the user of record for closing the constraint.
Where Can I find Constraints?
Go to Actions > Constraints to view the full list of constraints across the database.
Use the side menu to choose which Constraint Type you want to view.
Hint: once you select the Constraint Type you can hide the side menu bar to allow more space for the grid view!
Double-click on the line item to open individual Constraints and add more info!
